How would I know when I need to replace brake pads?

I just had my new car inspected for my insurance company and it passed, but the mechanic said that I should probably think about changing the brake pads at some point. It's not a big deal now, but I'm wondering, how will I know when they do need to be
Most cars now have a "clicker" or a "squealer" device that alerts you as to when the pads need replaced. If you hear a noise when braking, it's time to replace the brake pads.
