Can I use a 4 wire marine starter instead of the 3 I removed on my 1999 Bayliner 135 hp mercruiser? How?

I cant find the part number on the old starter, nor can i find the serial from the boat. please help

Be CAREFUL! these starters come in a 9 tooth and an 11 tooth pinion gear. if you use the wrong one, you will ruin your ring gear, which is a real expensive repair. Best to remove the starter and take it to a dealer for indentification. look on the
