how to start a fire with a magnesium fire starter?

i got a magnesium fire starter and im trying to learn how to get it to work im used cotton balls and small sticks to bild a fire in crosslay pattern and i got it lit but it wouldnt stay lit or get bigger even when i blew on it a little. than i was trying

Are you talking about one of those blocky magnesium fire starters, where there's a rectangle of magnesium and a firesteel rod embedded on one side, such as sold by Coghlans?
