I bought a vintage Karmann Ghia & worry about rust & keeping it nice. Help!?

I just bought a beautiful vintage Karmann Ghia VW and love it to pieces. I am worried because I live in a wet climate (Portland Oregon in the rainy Pacific Northwest) and it tends to be pretty wet and rainy here. The humidity
Portland does not suffer from the saltwater as the coast does, not does the rain affect the car's finish. A car cover would help protect the finish.
They only use sand, not salt for the occasional snow storm in PDX.
