Tips on Ensuring Your Radiators Heat Your Home

If you are a home owner with a central heating system comprising of combination boiler and radiators you will at some point have come across the aspect of turning on you’re heating to find that your radiators are not giving off any heat. This is a regular problem that occurs in most homes. You will find that when you feel the radiator that it feels cold at the top but when you place your hands at the bottom of the radiator it is hot.

The most usual aspect when this happens is that your radiator has amassed air within. The air then rises to the top of the radiator which in turn then stops any hot water from getting to the top, so then feels cold. It is a simple process to amend this issue and that is simply to “bleed “the radiator. “Bleeding” is basically the process of releasing the air from your radiator. To release the air out of the radiator, or “bleed” the radiator you simply locate the bleed nipple (this is a small square shaped peg that is situated at the top of the radiator, usually protected by a round cast in the radiator body) and then open it by turning in a clock work motion. You will know when the air is being released as you will hear a hissing sound coming from the nipple. It is advisable to have a cloth with you for when the air has finished coming out of the radiator as at this point a small amount of water will start to appear. If the problem of air continues to block your radiators on a regular basis it is advisable to contact a heating engineer.

If your radiators have the opposite reaction where the top of the radiator is hot and the bottom cold you will more than likely have a build-up of rust and sludge within the bottom of the radiator. This process is a little different than bleeding your radiator due to the fact that you need to drain the radiator and flush out the rust and sludge that has built-up inside. To clean your entire heating system you will need to visit your local plumber’s merchant and purchase a proprietary sludge remover.
