What do I need to remove a 1995 vw passat oil filter?

I started doing an oil change on my 95 passat VR6 and everything was going great until I looked at the oil filter housing. I don't have anything that big to grip it and the "cap-type" oil filter wrench at pepboys didn't even come close to fitting.
use an adjustable wrench or a socket on the lower part of the cap just do it carefully so you don't mess it up
