Despite it being old and sometimes cranky, I loves my circulated-hot-water heat. Things in the house like chairs aren't stone cold like they get with forced air, etc. And when we lost a coupler last winter it sounded like the radiators were freaking possessed! (that happened in the smaller house with baseboard radiators and it wasn't that noisy!) But the plumber said there was no reason to do anything aside from replace the coupler, it was full of water, pressure was being maintained okay, the actual boiler/pump assembly was doing just fine. I just always hope they're training HVAC guys on the system in some fashion because the plumbers they send to fix it are getting older and older...
Why are my upstairs radiators hot when the heating is off?
We have a boiler downstairs and a hot water tank upstairs. As the weather is getting hot, we have set the system up to heat the hot water 2 x day, with heating OFF. Whilst hot water supply is good, the upstairs radiators still get hot - the nearer the hot water tank, the hotter. What can be done about this?
It might require having a heating contractor look at the system to see if it's off balance somehow. But, a less expensive fix is to try shutting off the valve on that radiator and see if it cools down. We have one that just keeps heat from the boiler -- even when the boiler is not on -- and this is our solution.
